Join our 2023 Betty White Challenge!

Today we celebrate the 101st birthday of iconic comedian and animal-lover, Betty White! Betty once said “Everybody needs a passion. Whether it’s one passion or a hundred, that’s what keeps life interesting.” Like Betty, our passion is animals and the life-affirming magic they create. Your $5 gift in honor of the legendary Miss White will make magic for the animals and people that depend on Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. Thank you for sharing our (and Betty’s!) passion!

Pets of the Week: Meet Our Bettys!

Let’s make this year’s SCCAS Betty White Challenge EVEN BETTYER than before! What are the odds we would just happen to have THREE pets named for the iconic comedian on her 101st birthday?! Go figure!! Like their namesake, these cuties have a way with the paparazzi — we’re grateful they’re using the limelight to promote the Betty White Challenge.

Betty the Cat

Betty and her three brothers were born to a feral mom on the streets of Beach Flats. They were rescued and went into a foster home. From the beginning brother Ernie has been the most brave and outgoing of the group. He’s developed a very sweet personality and loves to snuggle once he’s comfortable. He’s also protective of his little sister. Betty is more shy but has become braver recently and is much more comfortable being in close proximity to her foster mom. Both of them are very active and love to romp and play.  They are a bonded pair and will need to be adopted together into a quiet home with a cat-savvy adopter. Make an appointment to meet Betty and Ernie!

Betty the Chicken

Betty the chicken is a beauty. With some extra TLC she will blossom. Betty will make a wonderful addition to your family. Come meet Betty at the Shelter today!

Betty the Dog

Betty came into the Shelter as a stray. We do not know much about her life before now, but we can tell you she is a SWEETHEART! This girl is likely to brighten up just about every person’s day that she comes across. She has been a volunteer and staff favorite – walks nicely on leash and leans into any and all affection given. Betty prefers a more laid back, mellow dog friend. A home with a dog-savvy pup may be a fit provided they meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. We do not have a history of Betty with kitties. Any kids in the home should meet prior to adoption. Betty seems to be a smart cookie and loves to show off her “shake” (See profile photo). A home that will continue positive reinforcement based training is recommended to enrich Betty’s life and continue building a bond with her adopter. Looking to adopt your new BFF?
